The Atherton Tablelands occupy the vast highlands west, north-west and south-west of Cairns. It is mostly devoted to agriculture but the region also boasts a thriving tourism industry, with such diverse pursuits as white-water rafting, skiing, hiking, camping adventure multi-sports and luxury spa treatments on offer.

The Atherton Tablelands feature many types of accommodation in or around the towns of Mareeba, Atherton, Yungaburra, Malanda, Millaa Millaa and Tolga. Bed and breakfast accommodation is particularly popular, and several world-class day spas and eco-resorts have also been established.

Farmstays are another popular option for international visitors, and camping and caravan parks remain one of the most popular options for locals. Both are well-represented on the Atherton Tablelands.

The Atherton Tablelands are accessible via the Kennedy Highway and the Kuranda Range, about 20 minutes north of Cairns International Airport, or via the Gillies Highway west of Gordonvale, about 25 minutes south of the Cairns CBD.
