Hospital plan not official
TALKS about moving the road in front of the Cairns Base Hospital to make more room for expansion were not official, says FNQ Hospital Foundation chairman Dr Ken Chapman.
Commenting on Mayor Kevin Byrne’s revelation in The Cairns Post yesterday that secret talks were had about resuming waterfront land to expand the hemmed-in hospital, Dr Chapman said he had been acting as "a concerned citizen only".
"The foundation has never considered the matter and it would not be appropriate for it to do so," Dr Chapman said.
A hospital spokesman also stressed yesterday there were no secret plans to resume public land.
He said that option was not being considered in the plans now being considered for the hospital's future.
Cr Byrne revealed Dr Chapman had twice asked him about the possibility of reclaiming the Esplanade road reserve in front of the hospital and moving the road close to the seawall.
