Norths in fine form
SATURDAY'S final Cricket Far North one-day fixture is likely to determine the make-up of Monday's limited overs final after Innisfail and Norths joined Rovers at the top of the table.
A rampant Norths smashed Barron River out of their match at the weekend, setting a mammoth target of 284 from its 50 overs thanks to a magnificent century to Darren Lees.
Opener Lees made 121 in his dig, smashing nine fours three sixes before Dan Weston broke through to give Barron a vital wicket.
While Lees provided the backbone of the innings, he was not alone in scoring runs, with Tom Maher scoring 45 and Christian Chapman an unbeaten 66.
If Barron thought the end of the innings would provide some respite, they were in for a surprise with Norths as aggressive with the ball as they were with the bat.
David Cavanagh was outstanding in his nine-over spell, finishing with 5-17 as Barron ran out of answers for their rivals.
In other matches, Innisfail virtually knocked Mulgrave out of contention for next Monday's final with a win in their clash at Fretwell Park on Saturday.
Mulgrave was bowled out for 87 in its innings, Innisfail needing just 30 overs to dismiss the home side.
"There's a bit of work to be done on our batting, there's no doubt," Mulgrave captain Dean Hanrahan said.
Hanrahan's bowlers battled well to defend the meagre total though, with Innisfail taking until the 48th over to pass the mark.
"I can't fault what our bowlers and fielders are doing," Hanrahan said.
"There's just too much work asked of them."
United may rue Saturday’s loss to cellar dwellers Atherton but could still make the final with a win against Mulgrave this weekend.
Atherton reaped more than 100 runs from the final 10 overs on Saturday to set United a target of 196 from its 50 overs.
But the home side could not replicate its rival's form down the stretch, scoring at little more than five an over in the final 10 to fall just short of the total.
In other games this weekend, Norths meets competition joint-leader Rovers in a virtual final playoff while Atherton hosts Barron.
Innisfail has the bye.
Early wicket: Mulgrave celebrates the dismissal of an Innisfail batsman in the first over.
