Jennifer Rardin (Orbit)
These are the latest two novels in the Jaz Parks series. Set in a world where vampires are real and some of them work for the CIA; Once Bitten, Twice Shy follows Jaz and her 291-year-old boss Vayl as they try to track down an ancient goddess of death who wants back in the world.
In the vein of Laurel K Hamilton’s character Anita Blake – but with less overt sex – Rardin’s books are tight, full of action and different enough to stand out.
Another One Bites the Dust continues the story in Once Bitten, Twice Shy with Jaz and Vayl trying to track down a vampire mastermind who may, or may not, be trying to take over the world.
The additions to the team, picked up in the first novel, add more dimensions to the story and the growing relationship between Jaz and her boss adds a bit more sex.
These are small tight plotlines with good dialogue and fast action. As the series grows it will be interesting to see where Rardin takes it.
Verdict: Couple of good supernatural thrillers.
