Mind games favour Norths
NORTHS has fired a psychological salvo in Rovers' direction ahead of today's Cricket Far North one-day final at Cazalys.
The two leading teams met in Saturday's final one-day round at Griffiths Park No 2, where Norths secured a Grand Final berth with a four-wicket win.
Rovers' 130-run target was never going to be enough, and despite a middle-order collapse, Norths always looked comfortable in their run chase.
But more importantly, the win also secured a psychological edge thanks to a devastating spell from Norths opening bowler Tom Maher.
He exposed a brittle Rovers top order that was at one stage reduced to 3-11. Maher finished with impressive figures of 5-11.
Any batting brittleness will be further exposed today after classy middle-order batsman Josh McGinty, who scored 57 in Saturday's recovery mission, was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
Rovers captain Richard Lillie admitted McGinty’s absence would be a blow, but it was up to other batsmen to step up.
"Most definitely he is one of the form players of the game at the moment, he makes runs, and usually makes them quick, but we’re going to have to do without him," Lillie said.
A win today would cap a stellar rise for Rovers who finished last year's Cricket Far North season in bottom place.
Lillie said victory would depend on how much his team learnt from Saturday’s match. "It (Saturday’s 130) was probably never enough runs, and we were always playing catch up, but I think, especially with Norths, they’re a team that if you can see off the new ball, you can definitely score runs against them."
Lillie's Norths counterpart, Christian Chapman was pleased with his team's performance but more delighted that he had a full squad to choose from.
Saturday's other final round matches between United and Mulgrave and Atherton and Barron River were both washed out.
