Mystery hunting death
A PIG-HUNTING trip ended in tragedy at the weekend when a 25-year-old Innisfail man died in mysterious circumstances.
The death, which occurred on Saturday morning when Innisfail man Yia Vang was hunting with a relative in rainforest off the Palmerston Highway, is being investigated by police but was not being treated as suspicious yesterday.
Police said Mr Vang's relative found him in a forested area "suffering difficulty" and ran back to the pair's vehicle to drive for help. But a lack of mobile phone coverage meant he was forced to drive about 14km and knock on the doors of several homes before he could raise the alarm.
Ambulance officers from Millaa Millaa were called in but Mr Vang is believed to have died at the scene.
The incident happened in national parkland beside the Palmerston Highway and close to the Misty Mountain trail network.
"Unfortunately, he (relative) encountered extremely difficult circumstances with no mobile phone or radio coverage and he had to go to a number of houses before he could get help," Sgt Duane Amos said.
Police and the family were awaiting post-mortem examination results.
"This is a reportable death under the Coroner’s Act … but on preliminary investigation there does not appear to be suspicious circumstances," he said. Mr Vang was a member of Innisfail’s Hmong community.
The community's Far North Queensland president, Innisfail's Kou Yang, said many people were in mourning for a "very kind young man".
Mr Vang worked at Wangan's Northern Iron and Brass Foundry, near Innisfail.
"All the community loves him so much," Mr Yang said.
