Norths wins one-day crown
NORTHS' appetite for Cricket Far North titles has not been satisfied by yesterday's one-day championship win, with captain Christian Chapman warning "the job's not done yet."
Norths beat underdogs Rovers by 16 runs for the one-day cup, with Norths bowler Dave Cavanagh winning the Jeff Hopgood Memorial Trophy for man-of-the-match after taking 4-23, including a match-turning two wickets in the 48th over with Rovers threatening an upset.
Norths set a target of 166 from their 50 overs at Cazalys yesterday, a total made reasonable after Clint Maltby took advantage of the foundation laid early in the innings to flay 39 off 36 deliveries and add valuable runs in the closing overs. "All through the day we built partnerships, the boys put us in the position where Clint could have a go at them late, (so we could) bowl at some runs," Chapman said.
Norths won the first battle that mattered yesterday, their victory at the toss allowing them to stay out of the sun in the hottest part of the day with Rovers taking the field at 10am.
"We definitely wanted to win the toss and bat first because of the heat, it takes it out of you," Chapman said.
Rovers captain Richard Lillie said conceding late runs had cost his team dearly. "It was disappointing in the end, we were in the game and it was there for the taking but unfortunately in the last 10 overs they got away with a couple extra than what they should have and it proved costly," he said.
"It's really hard to hit boundaries here, I really hadn't appreciated it until I got out there (batting) myself this afternoon."
The big ground and slowish outfield favoured Norths late in the match with the Cavanagh twins Dave and Martin tying Rovers down and Dave striking twice in the 48th over.
"The last two or three games he’s bowled exceptionally, so has Tommy (Maher), everyone's just lifted in the last three games and put on such a great performance," Chapman said.
"All through the day it all fell into place, everyone did their jobs and the guys at the end came in and put the cream on the top."
But Chapman had a warning for anyone thinking Norths would be a pushover in the remainder of the season. "The job's definitely not done. The job's done after the two-day final," he said.
