Aborigines want best deal on gas
ABORIGINAL groups from Cape York to Brisbane have united in a bid to get the best deal for their land if the Papua New Guinea to Australia gas pipeline ever goes ahead.
It is believed to be the first time all 13 traditional land owner groups have got together in an Indigenous Land Use Agreement over their lands.
A company backed by two of the country's richest men has applied to register the ILUA over an 800km corridor that stretches from Cape York almost to Cairns for construction and/or operation of the PNG gas pipeline.
Cape York Pipeline Company has applied to the National Native Tribunal to register the agreement it has reached with the 13 traditional owner groups for the land which runs from Injinoo at the tip of Cape York to about 180km northwest of Cairns.
It is a 20km wide corridor which covers 17,830 sq km.
The major shareholders of Cape York Pipeline are Mark Carnegie and John Wylie from Sydney advisory and investment company Lazard Carnegie Wylie.
A consultant who had been dealing with the ILUA for Cape York Pipeline said registration of the agreement was merely to signal that should anyone proceed with the project in the future, they would know they were dealing with one organisation representing all the traditional owners.
