Search for missing diver
POLICE will this morning resume the search for a 21-year-old diver who went missing while spear fishing off Otter Reef near Cardwell.
Acting Insp Steve Kersley said the diver was with another man when he went missing late yesterday and was not wearing any identifying diving gear.
"It's not looking the best," Insp Kersley said after the search was called off about 9pm last night.
Initial investigations have revealed that the diver, believed to be from the Tully area, dropped his spear gun which became wedged in coral.
He dived down to get the gun, but experienced difficulty when he attempted to resurface.
The other man on the boat reportedly tried to save him, but was unsuccessful.
The incident happened about 4.30pm yesterday, with the Tully Coast Guard and the EMQ rescue helicopter conducting the initial search, which was co-ordinated by Cairns Water Police.
The search was stopped last night because of poor light.
