Bligh: Ban all alcohol
PREMIER Anna Bligh is expected to push for a total alcohol ban in all Aboriginal communities when she meets the Cape region's mayors this month.
The Premier has already set down a strict alcohol management scheme for 19 remote Cape communities and is expected to take an even tougher stance when she meets community leaders in Cairns on February 15.
"The Premier's view is that the situation is a disgrace," a spokeswoman for the Premier said.
"While there has been a lot of good work and best intentions in these communities, the effect of the Alcohol Management Plan is spotty at best.
"Until we get the adults sober we are going to continue to see problems."
Since the inception of the management plan in December 2002, the sale and possession of alcohol has been restricted in 19 Cape communities.
But this month's meeting is expected to demand a total ban of alcohol in all of the communities.
Last week, a team of junior basketball players from Mornington Island complained team members as young as 12 were searched for alcohol and contraband when they returned home.
But community heads have labelled the hard-line stance as "unhelpful".
Napranum CEO Peter Solly said his community needed government assistance and extra funding, not bans.
"We're already living in prohibition, you could say," he told The Cairns Post.
"We'd like to see an increase in our base funding, instead of talking about their alcohol management plan which is already in effect."
He said the various community heads had been informed that total alcohol bans were on the agenda but had not been offered any chance to comment or submit their own ideas.
Anyone caught breaking the existing alcohol restrictions can face up to $37,000 in fines.
But some critics have labelled the Government's alcohol management plans useless because some residents always manage to beat the grog bans anyway.
