The Accidental Sorcerer: Rogue Agent 1
K E Mills (Harper Voyager)
The first in a new series, The Accidental Sorcerer is thumping good read with explosions, talking birds, magic wands and dragons all wrapped in a mid-nineteenth century comedy of manners.
Gerald is a low-grade wizard with barely enough oomph to undertake his middle-management public service job.
And he really has to get it right this time. Gerald doesn’t have a famous wizarding name, he’s the son of a tailor, and this is his final opportunity to make his name in the world of magic.
Needless to say, Gerald ends up needing a new job. The Accidental Sorcerer is full of dry, English wit with lots of barmy characters and a few moral dilemmas.
What makes it stand out from the crowd of fantasy novels are realistic thoughts of the characters. Take away the magic and you have a good story about social mores.
The prose is funny, tight and strangely believable. You’ll all be rooting for Gerald to come out on top.Verdict: Great fun fantasy read.
