Rolicking fantasy read
Good Omens
Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman (Orion)
This is a very funny book if you like your humour to be English and absurd.
Terry Pratchett – renowned for his Disc World series – teamed up with Neil Gaiman – creator of the Sandman series – to write a history of the ‘End of the World’.
Good Omens has an angel and a devil – although they’re rather good friends – a witch, a witchfinder general’s apprentice, a couple of typical kids, a number of wonderfully batty support staff and a rather large dog – that ends up quite small.
There are straight digs at the Bible, religion, government, development, pollution and society in general – all cleverly rolled up in quality slapstick laughs.
Typically Pratchett there is a touch of the Sandman in the descriptive passages, especially when it comes to the burning Bentley.
All in all, Good Omens is a great read with laugh-out-loud moments and a message that will resonate gently.Verdict: Rolicking fantasy read with something to say.
