Teen revives drunk, 12
A TEEN has told how she helped revive a 12-year-old girl who collapsed after binge drinking at an out-of-control Bayview Heights party on Saturday night.
The 18-year-old, who wants only to be known as Shelby, said she saw children as young as nine at the party, as well as teens and adults taking drugs.
"A mate and I were driving down that street to go to her house when we saw all these kids out on the street,`` Shelby said.
"There was yelling and screaming ... one girl was spewing up her guts and then she blacked out.
""The girl was about 11 to 12 years old.
"I stayed with her and helped her."
But Shelby said soon after the girl came to, she was holding another can of rum.
"A few years ago you would not have seen a 12-year-old at a party like that. Now kids are jumping out their windows to get to these parties," she said.
"I don't think many parents know their kids are getting drunk at such a young age."
Hundreds of teens gatecrashed Ben Bauer's 16th birthday party, hosted by he and his parents at their Peridot St house on Saturday night.
Eight police cars and the dog squad broke up the party after repeated complaints by neighbours.
The party triggered warnings about teenagers trying to emulate notorious Melbourne party-boy Corey Worthington.
Shelby said there was no doubt more teenagers wanted to be like Corey and host "outrageous" events.
"It"s all about how many friends you've got and what you do on the weekend," she said.
"If you tell people you went to a massive party on the weekend and got plastered, they think it's cool."
She said it was easy for parties to get out of control: "It only takes a text message".
Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Services clinical nurse consultant Karen McMahon said she would be extremely concerned if children as young as 12 were binge drinking.
"Drinking can cause significant damage to people`s health and that age is incredibly young," Ms McMahon said.
"It affects every organ in the body.
"It definitely affects the brain … it can cause memory loss, impaired ability to learn, confusion and hallucination."
