Teens pelt police with bottles

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

A POLICE officer has told how he and his partner were pelted with beer bottles when they tried to end a boozy party involving up to 600 teenagers.

Cairns Traffic Branch Constable Adrian Marek and Senior Constable Marianne West were assaulted as they responded to a noise complaint during the wild party at Vico St, Gordonvale, on Friday night.

The pair and council officers were confiscating a sound system when they were hit with projectiles by disgruntled party-goers just before midnight.

"We were taking the amplifiers away," Constable Marek said.

"Then the abuse and the stubbies started flying.

"I got struck in the middle of the back by a full stubby and in the hand with a full can.

"It could have been worse.

"If it had have been a few inches higher it could`ve hit me in the melon and I could have been down."

Sen-Constable West was hit in the calf by a beer bottle.

Constable Marek said dealing with such aggression was "part of the job".

"Usually it`s not the ones at the front of the crowd (who hurl bottles), it's the ones at the back," he said.

Queensland Police Union acting president Denis Fitzpatrick said officers were facing more risks trying to quell out-of-control youth parties because of the growing level of violence.

"It is with fear and trepidation that we attend but we have to attend on receipt of complaints," he said.
