Keep Law out of town
AN Alice Springs woman is trying to ban Cairns anti-war activist Bryan Law from returning to her town.
Mr Law and a group of protesters from Christians Against All Terrorism are planning another attempt to enter the Pine Gap spy base near Alice Springs after being acquitted of the same crime last week.
Maria Girando yesterday told The Cairns Post that she wanted to start a petition to help stop Mr Law and his group from returning to the area.
"Pine Gap is there for our advantage and our security," Ms Girando said.
"He is not doing Australia any good by trying to break into it."
Ms Girando also said she believed Mr Law's supporters had defaced street signs and as a ratepayer she did not want to be paying the clean-up bill.
However, Mr Law said he was already booked to return to the Northern Territory town and had even spoken to the spy base about his planned activities.
"The arrangement is we'll try to get in and they'll try to stop us," he said.
"That base is more and more a part of US war fighting every day."
Mr Law said he appreciated Ms Girando's views and her democratic right to express them but did not understand how she could be sure Pine Gap was harmless.
"They are concealing the purpose of Pine Gap from the Australian people," he said.
"I absolutely insist on using my democratic right to protest."
Mr Law also rejected Ms Girando's claims his group encouraged vandalism.
"In 2007, some person unknown to us graffitied street signs in Alice Springs.
"When we saw that we put out a call for people not to do that. That's not what we’re about."
Mr Law's group intends to return to Pine Gap on Anzac Day.
