Schier's force launch

Thursday, February 28, 2008

MAYORAL candidate Val Schier and her seven fellow council election hopefuls launched the Cairns 1st team's campaign in front of about 50 cheering supporters yesterday.

Ms Schier told The Cairns Post she would start releasing the team's six key policies in the lead-up to the March 15 election.

"We certainly have some promises that we'll be making," Ms Schier said.

With cheers from the audience, Ms Schier said a vote for her would keep a "Kevin Byrne - develop at any cost approach" at bay.

"We are driven by a set of values and will make open and transparent decisions that are not developer-led, like the Smithfield town centre proposal, or driven by the big end of town," she said.

"The wrong sorts of development kill character and the attributes that brought us here in the first place and keep the tourists coming."

Ms Schier said despite her team’s alliance, each representative would vote independently if they were elected.

"At times, this means voting differently," she said.

"However, because we stand for similar values, principles and policy, our voting patterns generally align."
