Kevin Byrne: Mayoral candidate
Statement: Kevin Byrne was born in Lae, Papua New Guinea, in 1949. He was schooled in PNG and later went to Nudgee College in Brisbane.
Affiliation: Unity
In 1969 he attended the Australian Army’s Officer Cadet School where he graduated with the Sword of Honour.
In 1992, Kevin Byrne was first elected Mayor of Cairns City.
In 1995, following the amalgamation of Mulgrave Shire and Cairns City, Kevin worked in Northern Russia and Papua New Guinea.
Following this, he returned to Cairns and was re-elected as mayor in March 2000.
He has been involved in the emergence of Cairns as a premier regional city in Australia and restoring the council’s financial fortunes.
Kevin was awarded the Papua New Guinea Independence Medal (25th Anniversary) for services to Aviation and Tourism in 2000 and in 2003 the Australian Centenary Medal for services to Local Government and the City of Cairns.
He is married to Amanda and with their daughter Isabel, lives in Cairns in the suburb of Whitfield.
