Students bloody good at giving

THESE young bloods will save lives.

Just one donation from each of these 16-year-old students will save three lives.

Young Bloods, part of the Club Red program, which was known as the Red Race, encourages students to get a group of friends together and donate blood.

With less than 4 per cent of Australians donating blood, every drop counts, Australian Red Cross spokeswoman Deb Ryan said.

Students from Trinity Bay High, Cairns High, St Monica’s and St Augustine’s schools are on a mission to see which school donated the most blood over two terms.

"We need 210 donations every week to meet the demand in Cairns," Ms Ryan said. "The students realise that they are helping save lives by giving blood and we try to educate them while they are young so it becomes a lifetime donation.

"They get really enthused and they make it a fun thing to do."

St Augustine’s College has won the competition two years in a row but Trinity Bay students are eager to "knock the socks off them", Ms Ryan said.
