Council hopefuls down to business
TABLELAND mayoral hopeful Tom Gilmore has come out trumps in a survey of Mareeba business people on the race for the top job at the Tableland Regional Council.
Mayoral candidates last week pitched their business credentials to 70 members of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce.
In a survey, 27 per cent of the respondents picked Tom Gilmore as their preferred mayor, followed by Joe Moro on 20 per cent.
Joe Paronella and Geoff Stocker each picked up 10 per cent of the votes and Peter Hodge got 2 per cent.
Twenty-four per cent of people at the meeting were
undecided.
The forum did little to sway voters’ opinions, with 79 per cent of people confirming their voting intention had not changed as a result of the meeting, compared with 21 per cent saying it had changed their minds.
In the swinging/undecided voters’ stakes, Cr Paronella was the clear winner.
Cr Gilmore picked up one undecided voter but lost six votes to three other candidates, while Mr Hodge and Mr Stocker lost one vote each.
Cr Paronella lost no votes and managed to pick up four additional voters.
