Kid gang strikes again
A WOREE man was set upon and violently bashed by a gang of youths on Saturday.
The bashing came only a day after the arrest of a 12-year-old alleged ringleader of a gang of youths who used a knife to attack and rob two men in a similar attack last week.
David Parker, 39, required emergency surgery to his arm and face after he being set upon by at least 12 children aged between 12 and 16 on Anderson St, Manunda, about 4.30am Saturday.
The office worker was released from Cairns Base Hospital yesterday after undergoing surgery on his smashed nose and having plates screwed into his badly broken arm.
He can also look forward to further operations on his shattered arm and has been told to expect pain and arthritis in the limb for the rest of his life.
"It was just a couple of seconds of madness but it will stay with me for life," he told The Cairns Post from his hospital bed.
Mr Parker was approached by the gang of at least 12 Aboriginal youths, who asked for a cigarette, opposite the Manunda Park at the intersection of Anderson and Pease streets as he was walking to meet his partner at the nearby ambulance station.
"When I said I didn’t have any, the littlest one said 'Then we’ll take your wallet instead'," Mr Parker said. "Then the one behind me reached around and smashed me right in the face."
The group knocked him to the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched him in the head, shoulder and back before he broke free and ran away. But the gang caught up with him after a few metres and forced him to the ground where they continued to kick him in the head.
He finally managed to stagger to the safety of the nearby Shell Service Station and take refuge.
Police are investigating any links between the two bashings and are appealing for anyone who witnessed either attack to contact them on 4030 7000 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
