Croc gives rangers slip

THE croc that surfaced in Centenary Lakes last week has disappeared.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife regional director Clive Cook said  rangers had not been able to find the 1.5m croc, which was snapped by an amateur photographer on Thursday afternoon.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife regional director Clive Cook said rangers had not been able to find the 1.5m croc, which was snapped by an amateur photographer on Thursday afternoon.

"We’ve done spotlight surveys there but we haven’t been able to find him because there’s too much weed in the lake at the moment," Mr Cook said.

"Obviously, with all the flooding we’ve had, we do have the expectation that crocs will move into quieter water.

"The lakes are a classic example of this."

QPWS rangers Brian Wright and Clayton Enoch yesterday scoured the lakes for any sign of the animal.

"If someone spots him, we’ll go out at night and do spotlight," Mr Cook said.

But he said they would only remove the croc if it was big enough to be a concern.

"We’ll try and be a bit pragmatic," Mr Cook said.

"If he’s so small that he’s not worth worrying about, then we’ll just alert the public to the fact that there’s a small croc in there and let him move on in his own time."

He said if anyone caught sight of the crocodile, they should notify QPWS as soon as possible.
