Mayor in watchdog scrutiny
A RESIDENTS' group member who wants Mayor Kevin Byrne to declare his business interests has lodged a complaint with the Crime and Misconduct
Commission.
A spokeswoman for the commission yesterday confirmed that the misconduct watchdog had received a complaint from John Babet, of the Cairns Ratepayers’ Action Group.
But the complaint was only being assessed at this stage, she said.
Mr Babet had been trying to meet Cr Byrne to discuss business interests he claimed the mayor had not declared.
Cr Byrne last week complained to police after Mr Babet left a message on his home answering machine saying that he was "going public" unless he agreed to a meeting.
It was incorrectly reported in The Cairns Post on Friday that police had given Mr Babet an official warning about the phone call.
Acting Det Insp Brad Eaton said police spoke to Mr Babet but no action was taken.
