Council to end in dignified manner
CAIRNS City Council will end its 13-year history in a dignified and quiet fashion, says Mayor Kevin Byrne.
The final meeting before the merger with Douglas Shire Council will be held at the council’s Spence St office tomorrow from 5.30pm.
"It is the unanimous position of this council that we end with the final meeting in a dignified, quiet fashion, at the same time recognising the historical significance of the occasion," Cr Byrne said.
Cr Byrne said it was March 1995 when the modern Cairns City Council came into existence.
"I welcome members of the community to come along and witness this meeting which will mark the close of one chapter and the opening of another in the annals of local government history in Far North Queensland," he said.
"It has been my privilege and honour to have held the post of mayor of this city for eight years and I will chair this meeting to bid farewell to three retiring councillors, Jeff Pezzutti, Fran Lindsay and Margaret Gill, who have all done a sterling job for their community."
An official photograph will be taken before the meeting and Cr Byrne will give a closing speech.
