Hot cross buns selling well

Thursday, March 20, 2008

HOT cross buns are selling like hot cakes, forcing bakers to ramp up production so they don't run out on their biggest trading day today.

Demand was so high at Brumby’s Edge Hill yesterday, buns sold out by lunch time as shoppers stocked up for office morning teas and family outings over the long weekend.

“People were coming in and buying five six-packs at a time,” said franchisee Jason Sterling, who was planning to work three bakers on 10-hour shifts last night to make enough buns to fill all the new orders.

“Today I made 600 but I underestimated the amount, I could easily have sold 1000,” he said.

The city’s biggest independent baker Cairns Breadworks also was gearing up for a bigger rush this year.

“The funny part is that as much as the interest rates and other costs go up, we still don’t tighten our belts on special occasions,” head chef Pierre Fuduche said.

He said he expected to sell about 3000 buns today, about 15 per cent more than last year.

At Stockland Earlville’s Baker’s Delight, franchisee Nicole Williamson expected to sell about 6000 buns today with traditional fruit buns outselling the chocolate chip variety three to one.
