Police road blitz for Easter

POLICE are conducting one of the biggest speeding and drink-driving blitzes ever on Far Northern roads this weekend.

Traffic Branch police and general duties officers will have their ranks swelled by usually desk-bound officers over the weekend to put a stop to drink driving, dangerous behaviour and speeding.

More than 20 officers will conduct random breath tests and random street patrols to catch out speedsters every day this weekend.

With more police out on Far Northern roads, Traffic Branch’s Sen-Sgt Preben Farbaek said there was little place for lawbreakers to hide.

“It’s the biggest group of police officers working out of this office (Traffic Branch) at one time that I’ve ever seen in Cairns,” he said.

“The chances are if you’re on the roads you won’t just see one police car, you’ll see several cars.

“The main thing is that people need to plan their trips, prepare and drive to the conditions.”

No one was killed in the Far North last Easter and police are eager to prevent any road fatalities this long weekend.

“We’re hoping that we won’t have anyone die on our roads this Easter,” Sen-Sgt Farbaek said.

“Neither do we want people injuring themselves in accidents.”

Drivers caught drink driving this Easter face potential disqualification periods from one to 12-months.

Fines can range from a few hundred dollars up to $2000 for a first drink driving offence.
