POLICE have slammed the dangerous behaviour of Far Northern motorists, including two who clocked almost 70km/h over the speed limit, during the Easter weekend.

Dozens of drink-drivers were caught by police, who said they were shocked by how many speedsters were on the roads.

More than 300 traffic infringements have been handed out by Cairns police since Thursday night for speeding, drink driving and dangerous driving.

Police nabbed a P-plater who was three times the legal limit during early on Friday morning. The 17-year-old was stopped in Alfred St, Manunda and returned a reading of 0.05.

A driver was stopped on the Kennedy Highway, near Ravenshoe on Friday afternoon after being caught doing 170km/h in a 100km/h zone. Cardwell police also caught a man doing 164km/h in a 100km/h zone.

Traffic Branch officers from Cairns, Innisfail and Mareeba encountered several drink-drivers on the roads.

Tully police came across a crash on Davidson Rd, Euramo, about 11.45pm on Thursday.

About the same time, a Cowley Beach man was charged with drink-driving after returning a reading of 0.10. A 20-year-old Townsville man was charged after blowing 0.16 at Mourilyan.

Officers also found items used to smoke cannabis after pulling over a truck for a random check on Saturday night near Tully.

The 23-year-old female passenger will face court next month.

Dismayed: Police say too many drivers have been caught for serious misdemeanours on the region's roads over the long weekend.
