Racing towards show
THE Cairns Show's new organiser has taken a big step up from organising the Birdsville Races.
"It’s a bit crazy coming from a town of 100 people to helping organise a show that’s going to see 70,000 people come through over three days," show association manager Alison Stickens said.
"The sheer size of it is massive. All the organising is amazing – but someone has to do it."
The show is expected to attract tens of thousands of people from July 16-18 and Ms Stickens said she and her team was just starting to come to grips with the sheer size of the operation.
Ms Stickens, who is also the first female Cairns show manager, spent the past four years running the Birdsville Races.
More than 1600km west of Brisbane on the edge of the Simpson Desert, Birdsville consists of little more than a small collection of houses and a pub and with a population of only 100, is truly one of the most isolated places in Australia.
