Into The Tigers' Den
TONY HILLIER writes about a fresh music venture.
A brand new venue in Cairns’s northern ’burbs promises to add some teeth to the local live music scene.
The Tigers’ Den at the North Cairns Football Club is set to show its stripes this week.
The Cairns Jazz Club, relocated after the demise of the Cairns Yacht Club, starts proceedings with the first of its weekly sessions at the Den tonight.
Friday night will see the launch of local country singer Shari Williams’s debut CD Sunny.
The initial Sunday session at the Den will be a rock‘n’roll and blues party with Kickstart and The Flaming Cane Toads, from 4pm to 8pm.
On Friday, April 11, Original Sing, the first in a monthly series of singer-songwriter nights, will showcase the talents of Kaoz, Jaime Davidson, Steve Williams, Shari Williams and The Front Ear.
The following Friday, April 18, has been selected by People Advocating Live Music as the inaugural PALM Friends event. Cow Bay pop/rock band The Coils will be the feature act.
Long-running Australiana ensemble Snake Gully will be on duty on Anzac Day, Friday, April 25.
"The Tigers’ Den is seeking country, blues and rock bands to book for paid gigs every weekend," says organiser Aleta Tulk, who adds that Sunday afternoons will be devoted to soul and rock‘n’roll.
"The club has a proper wooden dance floor, a newly installed stage, in-house PA and lighting and a licensed bar and hot food will be available."
Tulk reports interest from performers down south. Adelaide-based Celtic fusion band The Borderers is booked to perform at the Den in May.
An acoustic version of The Roses & Rogues Showcase, featuring country rock performers Kimber Sparks, Rod Dowsett, Lance Galloway and Shari Williams is pencilled in for a Sunday session in June.
In the interim, Shari Williams (pictured) is busy preparing for the launch of her aforementioned debut CD this week. Five of the 10 tracks are self-penned, including the first single Outta Here.
The Tigers’ Den at the North Cairns Football Club opens this Friday night. For more information phone 0402 534 731.
