Karen van Harskamp spends five minutes with Beverley Escott.

Why did you want to express

yourself artistically?

I started to paint at the Art Centre at Mornington Island. I was waiting for the mail plane to land at the airstrip so I waited at the Art Centre talking to the old ladies when Brett Evans, the co-ordinator, asked me if I wanted to do a painting while I was waiting. When I finished he told me it was really good and asked if I wanted to join the group of artists and paint every day. I said yes.

How long have you been practising art?

I have been painting on canvas and linen for about a year. About 10 years ago I knew a man who was an artist – I used to help him decorate turtle shells and sea shells, but not really paintings.

What are you working on/exhibiting?

I really enjoy painting each day. It’s good to paint with the other artists. I like to paint my totem, which is Thanbe and associated stories like the Gathagu or Redbill. I paint body paint designs or paintings about my totem. I am exhibiting my paintings on the KickArts Feature Wall until April 28.

Where are you heading in the future?

I am painting for a group exhibition of emerging artists in Brisbane.
