Popular weekend spot: Tinaroo Dam is popular with both locals and tourists alike.

Tinaroo Dam on the Atherton Tablelands is one of Cairns' favourite weekend camping spots.

Popular with water skiers, wakeboarders, sailingweekend campers and school groups, Tinaroo is a man-made dam that was completed in 1958.

The dam wall is around 45 metres high and contains enough water to fill three quarters of Sydney Habour, making it one of the biggest water trapments in Queensland.

When the dam was filled in 1959, the old township of Kulara went underwater, with all of the residents relocated to Yungaburra and surrounding towns.

These days Tinaroo is a popular weekend holiday spot, with over 500,000 visitors per year. It is surrounded by the Danbulla State Forest and features a number of camp grounds, BBQ areas and numerous swimming holes.

It also features excellent fishing, with the dam being stocked every year with baby barramundi from the Walkamin Research Station.

Tinaroo Dam is located on the Atherton Tablelands and is best accessed by car. There are several vantage points to the dam, the best being around the township of Yungaburra.
