Monster croc barges off

Friday, April 11, 2008

A MONSTER crocodile caught in a Cape York creek earlier this week will be transported by barge to Cairns today.

The 4.5m saltie, snared on Tuesday in a creek-side trap near Injinoo, 925km north of Cairns, had been housed in its trap in a warehouse at Bamaga.

Bamaga police acting officer-in-charge Sgt Glenn Smith said the crocodile was a "lively and aggressive" animal and was tricky to trap.

He said there was high interest in the small community when about 100 children and parents looked on to see the croc hauled out of Cowal Creek.

"It was a big croc," Sgt Smith said.

"He was definitely larger than the one caught last week."

Parks and Wildlife Officers and police had tried to catch the large croc for the past fortnight. It is likely the animal will be sold to a farm or zoo.
