FOR some people, travelling the world challenging people to oversize, outdoor chess might seem like the stuff of fantasy.

But for Robert Gauthier, it's all in a day's work.

The 62-year-old Canadian international teacher has spent the past 10 years travelling the world, teaching and playing outdoor chess along the way.

Among his appointments, Mr Gauthier has been a private tutor for the Saudi royal family and the daughter of the president of China.

Yesterday, he set up on the Esplanade.

"It's so nice here in Cairns, I love it," he said.

"It's such a nice backdrop to be playing against and it's nice to bring some more cultural activities to the town."

Mr Gauthier will be at the Esplanade Lagoon today and tomorrow from 12-5pm.
