Best dancers show style

THE best hip-hop, break and krump dancers in Cairns drew a 1000-strong crowd last night to Stomp the Nard.

About 40 up-and-coming and professional dancers took to the stage at the Cairns Esplanade for the fourth event which organisers hope to take to Townsville and Mackay and southern states.

The last event was four months ago and only drew about 100 people.

"It has built on momentum," organiser Spencer Browne said. "We got a lot of young guys here."

Angelo Saliba, known as DJ A.N.G, said the aim of Stomp the Nard was to educate the community about hip-hop because it was usually associated with crime.

"It gets them off the streets," Mr Saliba said of some of the dancers.

"It’s really cool for them to get on the stage and do their thing.

"It’s fitness and there’s no age barrier."

Dancer Mark "Montaj" Montajes said organisers wanted to take the event to southern cities.

"Competitors get to take off their work uniform and do what they love most," Mr Montajes said.

"We want to bring what the north has here to the southern cities and show them what we’re about."

Crowd pleaser: Performer 'Dubbs' was one of the dancers who turned up the heat last night during the Stomp The Nard event.
