The Ulysses is a beautiful butterfly that inhabits rainforest areas around the Cairns region.
Found in rainforest areas all over the region, the Ulysses' rich blue and black wings are known as a symbol of the North.
Lush rainforest is one of the main reasons that tourists flock to North Queensland, with Cairns one of the best places to access world-heritage sites such as the Daintree Rainforest National Park.
The age old rainforests of the region boast a plethora of animal, bird, marine and insect life, many of which are unique to the area.
Along with the Ulysses, Cairns has another iconic butterfly icon, the Cairns Birdwing.
The Birdwing is a vibrant green and gold and is the largest butterfly in Australia, boasting a wingspan of up to 20cm.
You can catch a glimpse of these beautiful species in rainforest areas of the Cairns region, as well as the Butterfly Sanctuary in Kuranda.
