The Spirit Stone
Katherine Kerr (Harper Voyager)

One of the most prolific and popular fantasy authors, Katherine Kerr returns to her world of Deverry and Dweomer (magic) carrying on the story of The Dragon Mage series.

For anyone who has read her work, The Spirit Stone continues the intricate world of reincarnation, elves, magic and dragons that Kerr has created.

Each novel has a number of threads, flashing back in time from one character’s earlier life and tying together the various threads of Wyrd (fate) that has kept the Deverry world at the forefront of fantasy literature.

Well-loved characters like Jill, Nevyn and Rhodri have been re-born yet again and must continue to fight to keep evil at bay.

For new readers, The Spirit Stone can be read as a stand-alone story but for more enjoyment a dip into earlier novels is well worth the effort.

The prose is oddly archaic, yet not at all stiff, the action is fast-paced and authentic – Deverry is a world somewhat like Celtic England.

But it is the characters the are the true gold of Kerr’s novels.

The feisty female warrior-mage, the crusty ancient magician, the head-strong, romantic fighting bard, the enigmatic elves, the alien Horsekin and the petty foibles and jealousies of everyday people are all wrapped up in a delicate web of magic and romance.

Verdict: Kerr’s world at its best and a rollicking tale of magic, swords and love.
