Baby boom in Far North

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

LITTLE Siannah and Katelyn McGee are one set of four twins born in March, as the Far Northern baby boom continues.

Thirty-two days old, these little girls are two of 657 babies born at Cairns Base Hospital during the first three months of this year.

The McGee twins are also part of four sets of twins born in January and three sets in February.

Parents Libby and Phil McGee said they did not plan for twins.

"Definitely not," Mrs McGee said.

"It was a huge shock for us but they’re beautiful.

"We’ve been blessed with them, that’s for sure."

Integrated Women’s Health nurse unit manager Sharon Borger said the Far North had a high rate of twin births.

There were 219 babies born in January, February and March and the 657 births this quarter were 2.8 per cent more than the 639 births recorded during the first three months of 2007.

Mrs Borger said it kept staff busy with an increased workload for the midwifery service.

"We’ve had to put on extra staff for home visits but it’s good, it extends the boundaries because the girls on the wards do a wonderful job," Mrs Borger said.

She said Cairns was a growing region and the baby surge looked to be a continual trend.

"You’ve just got to look at all the houses popping up everywhere," she said.

Twice blessed: Libby McGee has it all ahead of her with the recent arrival of twin girls Siannah and Katelyn.
