The Good Parents
Joan London (Random House)

This beautiful book about families shows that, regardless of how we feel about our parents, we eventually become them.

Sometimes that is good, sometimes bad.

Maya leaves home to find freedom to do her thing, which is exactly what her mother did. Jacob has always been restless, but can’t understand it in his son and daughter.

Others with the same fears and problems all know they have good parents; they just don’t want to be like them – or with them.

Life teaches us all in the end, as the characters learn in this stunning book written in a lyrical style that subtly describes fear.

Verdict: One of the better books for this year.
