Finding His Place

As the title of his new solo exhibition suggests, Lockhart River artist Adrian King paints his place.

Adrian King is a Lama Lama man from Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, and a member of the reknowned Lockhart River Art Gang. He has a distinctive style of painting in which his subjects appear stylised, with little or no use of perspective.

Images of hunting, fishing and day-to-day activities in the Lockhart River community and on outstations are favourite themes. The naivety of King’s style is in contrast to the close environmental and social observations made in his works.

He paints his homelands in descriptive detail and contemporary life scenes include landscapes, people, cut away houses, roads, cars, animals and both everyday and special events.

"My recent works are about country, animals and people around me, especially family. I like to use bright colours," King says.

Ngacchi Nathangu (My Place) will open at 11am Wednesday, May 7, and will be on display in the KickArts upper gallery until June 2.

The exhibition launch is part of the Backing Indigenous Arts Program, an Arts Queensland initiative.
