Still Bloody Funny
Kevin Bloody Wilson is still touring hard and producing some bloody funny material, writes VAUGHAN MAYBERRY.
If you spent any part of your late teenage years growing up in the ’80s, the name Kevin Bloody Wilson would have featured in your must-have comedy collection.
If you didn’t, the 20-year cultural wheel has landed on the mid-to-late eighties and you now have the chance to see why the other Big Kev made such a name for himself.
Not that the 60-year-old king of crude went anywhere in that time.
In fact, he’s been touring and recording non-stop ever since his crude tunes became part of the Aussie vernacular back in 1985 with the ARIA award-winning comedy album Kev’s Back (The Return Of The Yobbo).
This bawdy bunch of ballads with names such as That’s What He Really Said, Mick the Master Farter, Living Next Door To Alan and, of course, the brilliant Santa Claus Song became instant classics.
They were so priceless Kevin could have packed his guitar away forever and still been a comedy legend.
But he pushed on to produce another 15 albums and is still going strong today.
The latest one is DILLIGAF (also the tag line of his upcoming tour) – and if you don’t know what that means, Kev delivers it over the phone in his usually blunt fashion.
"DILLIGAF – Do I Look Like I Give A F---," he laughs. "It’s an old army saying. My tour manager Hollywood was in the army and he used to say it all the time."
DILLIGAF is also the name of Kevin’s bar at the back of his house just north of Perth.
This is where many of the huge catalogue of lewd and explicit parodies have been born, thanks to many a drinking session with his mates over the years.
He also writes new tunes on the road as he spends almost six months every year touring with his wife Betty and his daughter, the aptly named Jenny Taylia (real name Tammy-Jo) who is now part of the act.
Betty and Jenny also play an even more important role in Kevin’s life as the sound board for any new jokes.
"Well, definitely my wife does most times," Kevin says.
"If she winces or pulls a face I know it’s a winner. If she laughs I give it to my daughter because I know it’s a girlie song."
Kevin is near the end of his first tour in two years. It takes in two states that continue to idolise him – Queensland and the Northern Territory.
He has been to Cairns many times over the years, the last time was in 2006, and his ability to belt out a funny tune on the guitar still manages to sell out all his live gigs here.
He says this weekend’s shows will be a mix of all his old classics plus a few new ones he penned recently.
"I’ve been working on stuff that’s a bit anthemic – is that actually a word?," he says.
"You know the Bellamy Brothers song Let Your Love Flow? Well I’ve written a song called Don’t Let The Goat Go.
"I’ve also been working on a song called the Alzheimer’s Song, but I can’t remember the words now."
