A 14-year-old boy has been left with horrific facial injuries after a senseless bashing at a school fete.

Michael Geoghegan had to have his mouth sewn up with seven stitches after he was king-hit and knocked to the ground in what his parents describe as an "unprovoked and senseless" bashing.

The attacked at St Theresa’s fete on Saturday has ignited horror memories for Michael’s mother, Sharyn.

Mrs Geoghegan’s brother was killed in a street fight in Cairns 20 years ago and the perpetrator walked free.

"One hit is all it takes," she said.

"It’s every parent’s worst nightmare.

"He’s alive and that’s the main thing."

The teenager’s father, Ken, told The Cairns Post his son’s once picture-perfect smile was now a torn mess with crooked teeth.

"Michael’s lip was flapping," he said.

"His teeth were on an angle and his other teeth were pushed out.

"Someone will get killed next."

When the attack happened, Michael was in a semi-lit area near the school library talking to a mate about 7.30pm.

According to his family, he was pushed from behind into his friend by a male, knocking him to the ground unconscious.

Since the attack, he’s had 19 needles to numb his mouth to realign his crooked teeth.

He now wears a temporary mouth bridge to help repair the damage to his mouth, which was left sliced and torn when his body thumped the ground. He will have root canal treatment on Saturday, which will take at least three months to recover.

Unable to talk but whispering because of the pain of his numb mouth, Michael, who cannot even eat pureed foods, said he did not know what was happening when he was knocked to the ground.

"I remember being pushed and I took a step back and don’t remember much else," Michael said.

"I just remember trying to get up off the ground."

The couple said they would take the matter further and try to get a victim support group started with the help of police, local politicians, elders and the Mayor.

"We want answers," Mr Geoghegan said.

"Our son has to put up with months of pain and agony and it’s absolutely shocking. Innocent kids will resort to carrying things (weapons) on them to protect themselves and they will become the bad guys."

Cairns Sgt Caroline Barker said police had dealt with the matter and no charges had been laid.

She said it was a fight between two 14-year-old boys and one of the boys had been spoken to.

The school was not available for comment yesterday.
