Demons, magic and machine guns
Saint City Sinners by Lilith Saintcrow (Orbit)
Dante Valentine, part necromancer, part demon, returns in Saintcrow’s popular supernatural series.
This time around Dante is feeling more than a little upset – her demon lover is proving intractable, she’s working for Lucifer again and her best friend in the world has asked for help; something she never does.
Heading for her home town of Saint City, Dante finds herself up against rogue demons, elegant vampires, werewolves who don’t know their place and most scary of all, her demon lover in a very, very bad mood.
For readers who love this genre – supernatural events and monsters in everyday life – Saintcrow has proven to be a popular proponent.
Her genre is similar to the ubiquitous Laurell K Hamilton, but the world Dante inhabits is harsher and full of more magic and gods – the Devil is a personal friend.
The plot is full of betrayal and twists, the language is colourful and the created physics of the world hold together well.
All in all, Saint City Sinners and the other Dante novels are great fantasy reads.
Verdict: Best if you’ve read other Dante novels but not necessary.
