Vampire noir
Half the Blood of Brooklyn by Charlie Huston (Orbit)
The undead private eye Joe Pitt returns with Huston’s signature noir-feel and enough action to keep the reader enthralled.
There’s something going on in Manhattan when every Vampryre is getting spooked and people are turning up dead.
Once again, Joe is caught between a rock and a hard place – between the Coalition and the Society.
Things are happening across the river in Brooklyn and Joe’s sent across to suss out a group that might join up with the Society.
Before he knows it Joe is being beaten up, yet again, and someone is dead.
Huston’s skill with the traditional noir detective genre is what makes the Joe Pitt novels stand out from the ‘supernatural’ crowd.
Over the last couple of stories, Huston has built up a series of characters and a believable history for the vampires of Manhattan.
Half the Blood of Brooklyn continues the story, adds new tension and characters and is an easy, exciting read.
It’s not necessary to have read Already Dead and No Dominion in order to enjoy this vampire thriller but more background always helps.
Verdict: Excellent version of the popular supernatural thriller genre.
