Rock Dream Team
With sell-out shows so far around the country, it looks like the Ian Moss and Jon Stevens 'Lets Get Together' tour will rock itself into the history books, writes EVA ROBERTS.
And it’s no surprise really. after all, it’s a rare occurrence for such a host of popular musicians to join forces and embark on a nationwide and regional tour.
As if the Ian Moss and Jon Stevens line-up wasn’t enough to get audiences excited, the two talented vocalists are joined by special guests Tania Doko (Bachelor Girl) and Jack Jones (Southern Sons).
For accomplished muso Ian Moss, the show is an exciting interlude to his already thriving and busy career.
With the release of another album, Lets All Get Together last year, and his appearance on hit reality television show It Takes Two, the former Cold Chisel guitarist has been understandably busy.
Yet the chance to embark on a tour with friends was something too good to pass up.
And thanks to the fact that Ian and Jon had already traversed the countryside together on the Six Strings & The Works tour a couple of years ago, the show was always going to be a sure-fire hit.
"I think that Jon and I, out of all the guys doing the Liberation Blue Acoustic thing, I would like to think we are at the more bluesier, soul end of the vocal styles," Ian says.
"So we just thought Tania Doko would be fantastic and would complement that beautifully. And also being a member of the fairer sex, so it is not all a male thing.
"And of course Jack Jones is a fabulous guitarist and singer.
"We sat down and handpicked those two to complement the whole show."
Sharing the stage with just a drummer and a stand-up bass, this show is not only a chance for guitar enthusiasts to experience the best of Ian’s playing, but also for audiences to hear his haunting vocals.
With a huge back catalogue of songs though, it was inevitable it would be difficult to pick which songs to perform.
Thanks to the release of Lets All Get Together, there was even more to choose from with covers of his own solo material, tracks he’d never previously recorded from the Cold Chisel days and new songs.
"I’ve given my own slant to the Chisel songs," he says of the album, and some of the tracks that he performs live.
"This is the first time I’ve ventured into songs that Barnes sang, for example Choir Girl and Flame Trees.
"I didn’t want to mimic the Chisel thing. I put a lot of thought and effort into coming up with my own versions and putting my own spin on the songs.
"They’ve gone down really well. People seem to appreciate the effort I’ve put into coming up with my own style with the songs."
Reworking some classics that have become a part of Australian music history could have been a daunting prospect, but not for Ian.
He rose to the challenge and enjoyed the chance to experiment.
"I figured if anyone has the right – if there is such a thing – to do Chisel versions, then it was a member of Chisel," he says.
"There was great music there that I had always been a part of.
‘The challenge is all about coming up with fresh ideas or fresh material.
"Fresh ideas are what keep you young and enthusiastic in this business."
