Posties fear dog attacks

AUSTRALIA Post fears it is only a matter of time before somebody is killed after a sixth dog attack on a postie in the past two months.

The postie was treated for a bite above his right ankle after the dog lashed out at him several times during his delivery round at Kanimbla last Thursday.

The attack comes just weeks after a postie was mauled at Trinity Beach.

Australia Post state communication manager Teresa Mullan labelled the most recent attack as "terrifying" before making a plea for action to Cairns dog owners and the council.

"This dog had several goes at our postie before finally getting him," she said. "That is terrifying for anybody. This is an ongoing problem for us and that’s why we are asking for help from the public and the council.

"So please, can residents with dogs make every effort to protect our posties as well as others in the community, especially children.

"The last thing we want to see is these attacks escalating to a situation where someone’s life is lost."

Ms Mullan said it was yet another "very worrying" incident for Australia Post in Cairns. But it is not just the spate of attacks on its workers that is angering Australia Post.

As revealed in The Cairns Post last week, Australia Post has sent a letter to Cairns Mayor Val Schier expressing its frustration that the dogs involved in the Trinity Beach attack were not put down.

The postie savaged in that attack said she had feared for her life.

The three large hunting canines, which residents had made known to the council were dangerous
after they attacked a child and another dog in February, were instead sent to a cattle property in the Gulf Country.

Ms Mullan said the council should follow the example set by Gladstone council. "A postie was attacked by a dog in Gladstone last week and that dog was destroyed on the same day," she said.

In response to the Trinity Beach attack Mayor Val Schier said the council’s Animal Management Unit would give a presentation to council on June 12. She said the council would then review animal by-laws.

It is understood the dog involved in the most recent attack has not been brought to the attention of the council in the past.
