CONSTRUCTION is about to start on Coles Sugarworld shopping centre at Edmonton, with the new complex set to open mid-next year.
And Coles is also on the move at Earlville, where it is expected to open a 3700sq m store at Stockland shopping centre early next year.
Rob Macfarlane from commercial real estate company CB Richard Ellis said stage-one of Coles Sugarworld allowed for at least nine speciality shops.
He said likely tenants were pharmacies, video stores, coffee shops and cafes, bakeries and takeaway outlets.
"The shopping village will be located in the heart of the new Edmonton centre making it a focal point for people," he said.
"Edmonton will be the hub of future residential growth in the Cairns area as it is one of the fastest growing residential corridors with the projected population to be 27,500 people by around 2010." The centre will have more than 180 car parks.
Edmonton shoppers soon could be spoiled for choice, with Lou Piccone about to start redevelopment work on Edmonton shopping world.
Cairns Regional Council has also approved a Supa IGA development near
Sugarworld.
Division Two Cr Nancy Lanskey said population growth meant the competing centres probably would be sustainable.
