Q&A with Alick Tipoti

Why did you want to express yourself artistically?

In many cultures art is the main source of expression. My culture is not a written language so information passes to many generations orally, through storytelling, singing, dancing and visual art forms such as artefacts. I did not choose art to be a tool of expression – art chose me.

How long have you been practising art?

Art in general terms is a major part of any culture. It branches off the central core of any culture that is language. I have been a practising artist since early primary school. My grandfathers were also artistically gifted people.

What are your thoughts on the local art scene?

There are a lot of great artists out there who are creating magnificent work, especially emerging artists – and it is great to have small and large regional art centres who are supporting artists. Although I prefer to work alone.

What are you currently working on/exhibiting?

I am signed with Australian Art Print Network and I have my exhibition titled Malungu touring nationally. We also have dates locked in for overseas exhibition venues. I’m also often involved in group exhibitions that pop up.

Where are you heading in the future?

At the moment I have two beautiful children, my 5-year-old daughter Dagum and my 3-year-old son Leniaso, who I dedicate most of my time to. In between I am carving away here at home creating new work.
