THE South Cairns Cutters are undefeated no more.

The AFL Cairns ladder leaders were humbled 24.9 (153) to 12.7 (79) by the Cairns Saints at Fretwell Park on Saturday.

The highly anticipated round nine clash did not deliver the close contest most expected with Saints earning the right to be called premiership favourites after turning on a majestic display.

Saints player coach Mark Kennedy admitted he was a little surprised the winning margin blew out to more than 10 goals.

"We knew we had it in us though. We've been winning by a fair bit the last few weeks," he said.

"The first 15 minutes Souths came out really, really hard and the boys did well to repel a lot of their attacks.

"We knew we had a battle on our hands and that we would have to meet Souths with their physicality and their skill level which is what we did."

The Saints led by 21 points at quarter time before blowing the game open in the next term.

Jason Eagle was the dynamite. The star forward was unstoppable in the goal square, kicking most of the Saints’ nine goals as Souths struggled to find the sticks at the other end.

The Cutters fans held some hope their side might recover from the 62-point deficit after halftime but with Souths forwards Marcus McMillan and Pat Ratray starved of scoring chances the Fretwell faithful were left disappointed.

Cutters coach Steve Daniel offered no excuses for the loss.

"Never for a minute did I think we were going to go through the season undefeated," he said.

"It has probably brought a few boys back to reality.

"Saints got us early and they were terrific. Their intensity, work rate - personally I thought they were pretty good across the ground.

"We strayed a bit from the game plan today but that was due to the pressure from the opposition."
