WOMEN are lining up in droves to grab tickets for the first screenings at Cairns cinemas tonight of Sex and the City: The Movie.

Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, the long-awaited film has all the elements of the original hit television show including affairs, break-ups, fashion shows, dream penthouses, pregnancies, weddings and of course, sex.

The storyline picks up four years after the show, following the lives of four 30-something women and their turbulent relationships with men in New York City.

Sue Selwood, duty manager of Cairns City Cinemas, said so far there had been a huge response to ticket sales and she expected tomorrow night’s sessions to sell out.

"We have had about 100 internet bookings, which is really unusual," she said.

"For once I’m trying to urge people to buy the tickets in the cinemas as the internet line is going to be really big."

The hype surrounding the release has already meant success in the box office, grossing $55.7 million in the first week in the US.

It dethroned the more macho Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull from the top spot, cementing its place as one of the hottest movie releases of the year.
