Toads take toll on crocs
SCIENTISTS have finally proven cane toads are croc-killers, having cut a swathe through a population of northern Australia's fresh water crocodiles.
For years toads, which are highly poisonous and have caused the decline of several native animals such as goannas and quolls, have been suspected to be fatal to crocs, however scientists have never been able to find proof.
University of Sydney biologist Dr Mike Letnic, who had previously studied freshwater crocodile numbers in the Roper River district of the Northern Territory, returned last year to find up to a 75 per cent reduction in the reptiles.
