Fatty fuel fans adventure

IT might smell like old battered fish but this vehicle makes up for it by being environmentally friendly.

Gerard and Rachel Mimmo left their corporate lives in Britain behind to begin the trip of a lifetime around Australia in a carbon-neutral car that runs on recycled cooking oil.

"It's a win-win situation for the fish and chip shops we're sourcing our second-hand oil from on our trip," Mr Mimmo said.

"Our 'Battered Fish' will be filling people's minds with that irresistible aroma of takeaway delights and Rachel and I will be doing our bit to limit our impact on the environment."

Until recently, Mrs Mimmo, 28, worked as a corporate lawyer while Mr Mimmo, 36, was a civil engineer who completed a Masters in Science, specialising in sustainability.

They arrived in Australia in May and after completing four-wheel-drive and first-aid training courses, set off for the camping adventure in the converted Toyota LandCruiser, picking up used oil along the way.

The oil is filtered and put directly into the modified vehicle.

The car is started using diesel or biodiesel and then switched to oil when it is warm enough.

The couple's insurer, ibuyeco, has sponsored the trip by offsetting any carbon the couple do produce.

The couple left Cairns yesterday, headed for Cape Tribulation and Cooktown.

Fishy fuel: British tourists Gerard and Rachel Mimmo have left behind their careers as professionals to travel around Australia in a van which runs on fish and chip oil.
